Shock as former manager emerges as candidate to take over at Boro

With the news the Middlesbrough have today parted company with manager Aitor Karanka, the rumour mill is in overdrive trying to guess who will become the next manager of the club and hopefully guide them to safety from the precarious position they currently find themselves in.

One name though seems to be coming up time and time again. Steve McClaren knows what it feels like to lose your job, after being let go by Derby (for the second time!) earlier in the week, but he may now be looking to get back into management quicker than he thought by making a surprise move back to the Riverside, where he enjoyed the best days of his coaching career.

Whilst Manager of the Teesside club, McClaren led them to their first ever silverware in the form of the League Cup and even got them to a European final after they came runner up in the UEFA Cup in 2006. Although he polarised fans due to his, at times, negative tactics he is still, without doubt, the clubs most successful manager.

His career since Boro has been a bit up and down. After an ill-judged spell as England manager he got back on track at FC Twente in the Netherlands where he won the league, but then subsequent spells in Germany and back in England have failed to inspire the fans.

Would boro fans welcome McClaren back or is it better to live with the memories?
